A decade or so ago I drove up to Maine to visit a friend in the interior, took the logging roads that wind through the beautiful, wild emptiness all the way to Moosehead Lake. Nick was working as a guide and we went to a secluded lake in search of a moose. The elusive moose never showed until we were bouncing back on the rocky dirt road. I quietly said ‘moose’ as a dark shadow ambled up ahead. Nick didn’t see it until we were almost upon it, when I said ‘moose, moose, MOOSE!’ We stopped just in time. What an incredible creature, and a joy to see in its natural habitat.
